The Making of the Ultimate Cat Post

Uncommon Goods Singapore Custom Cat Post

We thought to write this post because, now and then, we have customers who balk at the price of $180 for this classic cat scratching post.

“But Taobao is so much cheaper..”

Indeed, why pay $180 for a cat scratching post when you can easily find way cheaper posts online? So we thought, let's go into the making of our scratching post.

Uncommon Goods Singapore Making a Cat Scratching Post

First, design. All cats love to scratch. In the wild, they go at trees and rip off bark. It is thus important to have a post that is sturdy like a tree. Cat can go at this for ages and it will not shake, shudder, or topple because the core is 11cm in diameter. This allows cats to scratch, they can climb up and perch too. Our cat posts have been tested by our carpenters's cats and themselvs to ensure it can withstand the abuse and beyond. We dare say try it with any other cat post and it will break immediately.

Which brings us to material. We don't use cardboard to make the post. We use dense plywood, usually birch, which is THE best and most expensive plywood you can find in Singapore. It has a beautiful birch veneer that is soft to the touch and matches any home decor. It takes about 60 metres of manila/ sisal rope to make a metre-long post. Just imagine how many loops we need to make round the pipe.

And finally, finishing. Finishing is critical because we don't want splinters that may hurt your furkids. We sand away for ages, apply water-based coatings to ensure no VOCs affect the cats, and sand away again.

It takes a good half a day to make a beautiful post like this. Having Spotify helps when we start on the endless looping of rope around the post!
